ELBOW ROOM

This is where I collect and write things, mostly on academe and artificial intelligence. Established in 2010, by Vaishak Belle.

  1. It’s relatively easy, I feel, for writers to fetishise eastern cultures, perhaps unintentionally. Orientalist literature is an instance of this, and even modern writers can fall into that trap easily, which can go virtually unnoticed except from the eyes of, say, Asian readers, who recognise the underlying patronising tone or even an dabs of positive racism.

In that regard, it’s such a pleasure to read William Darymple. His non-judgemental, sometimes humorous, but always respectful and compassionate coverage of the complexities of Indian sub-cultures is a breath of fresh air. Ultimately writing about our history in a way you wish you did yourself - without any lazy abstractions or reductions.
