ELBOW ROOM

This is where I collect and write things, mostly on academe and artificial intelligence. Established in 2010, by Vaishak Belle.

  1. I do not know if me being in the area of artificial intelligence makes me unfairly impatient with plot devices like these but I can’t quite figure out what’s so fascinating about an ad hoc reinforcement learning system that supposedly becomes fully aware and act with purpose.

I thought for example, Arthur C. Clarke in 2001 A Space Odyssey had already leveraged quite charmingly the idea of a robot with ill intentions but to see even in this day and age the usual trope of having an emergent AI from an algorithm that teaches itself is disappointing. And it likely disrespects the intelligence of the reader. Might as well have an ominous being mysteriously emerge from your thrown away rubbish.

As we are well aware, there are far more unnerving issues with AI that is not that smart, but deployed in practice anyway. Such as criminal re offence predictors and face recognition systems.
