When watching the game on Sunday, one thought I had was that when racialised players take penalty shots and miss or make mistakes at crucial moments, which everyone does of course, there maybe the added pressure from a racial viewpoint, which is another burden they may need to carry. Perhaps not every racialised player feels that pressure, but given Mbappé’s remarks after one of the previous championships, I wouldn’t be surprised if this was a factor. That’s tragic and challenging. Cf also Trevor Noah’s remark about French players having dual identities after the last World Cup I think.
