Racialised people carry the burden of proof. We need to prove that we belong. Clarify our accents, justify our clothing and drinking choices, and validate our accomplishments. When encountering someone who has always belonged, we must be prepared to provide proof in short notice, “hey, I’m here, and have something to say”.
It is not that non racialised folks don’t encounter bias and distrust in our ancestral homelands. It’s just that the majority are instances of positive racism, a sense of the exotic, the wealthy, legacy of colonisation. It’s just that the majority of instances for racialised people is negative racism, a sense of the “we don’t want your type”, the poor, legacy of colonisation.
