I have fresh appreciation for mastodon. Earlier I felt it’s just a decentralised copy of twitter – what’s the big deal? But once you realise Twitter was both a social network for peers at the right level of professional insight + personal updates, as well as for a way for the population to share democracy related clips and bits, you realise the importance of such a network. Thus it is necessary for mastodon to exist, an object outside the control of some Silicon Valley entrepreneur. Cf also ezra klein’s nytimes article on twitter misjudged as a global gathering space.
