ELBOW ROOM

  1. A couple of differences between tumblr and twitter, for me:

Your tweets are displayed using twitter’s website, and although they have a permalink, you don’t have control over appearance and loading speed.

Tumblr is an actual website, your own, and so it feels more permanent. Search bar localised and feels personal

Twitter is great for going through, say, lists with 2000 people in a jiffy, and they can all share their news, papers etc. so really great for text based news

Tumblr really enjoyable with photos gifs illustrations and quotes. And can’t really imagine what following 2k people would feel like. Guess is it’s untenable.

So tumblr feels like a visit to a museum for me. Twitter a walk around an academic poster session. Former a pleasant break, with nostalgia and clever retro art and memes. Latter intellectually stimulating but can be exhausting too.

The word character limit on twitter is nonsense, however. perhaps that’s what makes twitter timeline readable, but don’t agree with philosophy of threads etc. Just really irritating for paying attention and reading through ideas and insights.
