I read a bio of a mathematician who said they work in area X, and don’t want to be associated or otherwise contacted about data science, AI, ML or anything like that. That’s a nice position to be in, because it filters a lot of noise about these things, but then it means you are choosing to not engage with something very related to your area.
In AI, we don’t have that luxury, and we need to constantly justify why our work still matters to every new fangled thing out there, so I guess that’s the other extreme.
